The main way to keep readers returning is to offer something unique. But that is easier said than done as there are well over 180 million blogs on the internet and hundreds more start up every hour. So what are some easy ways to keep your readers and stop having visitors just bounce off your website?
Content: I cannot stress this more. This is the key to retaining visitors. Many people say visual is the best but in this day and age when a person can slap on a perfectly designed web 2.0 template for free its getting harder to fool visitors that your content is good by just an excellent design. Some of the most popular websites on the internet have simple designs. But the reason they get a high rate of return visitors is content.
Perfecting your content is going to be a long and arduous task. I always tell webmasters to give themselves at least a year before they begin to see the perfection of their content. It’s very true that what might sound awesome written in a book is not going to sound like that on the net. The main reason is people are quicker (because it’s easier) to click the back button on their browser than put down a book. That is why it is important to grab your reader’s attention within the first paragraph or better yet sentence. If not they will click the back button faster than you could think.
The second most vital thing is the length of your content. While you might be describing some vital information the majority of website visitors are only interested in the main details. They are interested that the guy is wearing a shirt. Generally they’re not interested what type of shirt it is unless it’s vital to understanding the rest of the article. So you want to stick with the main points and leave the trivial details alone. After you have finished writing a post I would advise to review it two times. The first time for sentence structure and grammatical errors and the second time to make sure your post is in pace. Move on as quickly as you can and thus you will keep your readers attention.
Last but not least is the need to keep in touch with your readers. I would suggest using site analytics to see the demographic location of most of your readers. Also check where most of your traffic is coming from and also the keywords that brought them to your site. Another good thing is to install a contact box or poll. Conducting a weekly/monthly poll of the favorite articles on your website will greatly help you find your target audience and better suit your content for your visitors.
There are many other factors but I have noticed that most webmasters fail at content and since this is the basis of your site it is the first thing that you should be paid attention too.
