How to Use SEO Keywords

June 1, 2008 at 02:30 AM
Every good SEO (search engine optimization) specialist knows that the key to good content writing is to produce a website that is informative to the customer, while incorporating keywords that are not obvious, but are strategically placed to maximize the chances of a search engine picking up on them. One way of doing this is to hire a professional copywriter to write ad copy for your product and then ask them AFTER the content is written to incorporate some keyword phrases for you and make it sound natural. Using the three main types of keyword phrases (Principle, Lateral and Secondary) in the content copy will significantly increase the odds of your site being picked up by the search engine.

SEO companies are available for help on this issue. They will generate lists of words and phrases that they feel will be useful to your site in order to optimize the searching process. There is a process that most SEO specialists use that makes the generation of keyword lists quite simple. Most will make a chart with three columns: one for the Principle keywords, one for the Lateral keywords, and one for the Secondary keywords. The Principle keywords column will hold the basic keywords for your site. The Lateral keyword column will hold any descriptive words that apply to your site. The Secondary keyword column will hold any words that may be indirectly related to your principle keywords. The words in each column do not work alone. Instead they are dependent on each other in that hundreds or even thousands of keyword phrase combinations can be created from utilization of the entire chart. The list should be looked at and updated regularly because your products or your target audience may change from time to time.

Once the keyword list is generated and utilized, there must be some way to measure the effectiveness of the keywords you have chosen to use on your site. To do this you need to know how many hits you are getting and where those hits are coming from. You also need to know what words are being used on the search engines that are bringing customers to your site. There are various software programs out there that allow you to measure these things. Most web hosting packages have the software included. Google offers one called Google Analytics. It is a free service that creates extensive and informative reports that you can use to work with your SEO specialist to determine whether you are getting a good return on your investment and where you need to make changes. So, remember this, when you are writing ad copy for your website. All words have the capacity to be keywords. How you use the words that your target audience will most likely use in the search engine is going to be the biggest indicator of how successful your SEO project will be. If you do not use the words that the customers are looking for, you will not get hits from the search engines.
